Winter Cleaning Tips (What You Want To Know Wednesdays)

Fall cleaning is a great idea and HouseLogic.com provides tips for cleaning our homes. We’re getting ready to shut our windows and doors for the next few months. Your house will have collected dirt and dust from the spring and summer months. Here are some tips to keep your home clean for winter.

  1. Wash and disinfect garbage cans. Take them outside and blast the insides with soap and water. For an environmentally safe disinfectant, use a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar. Let the mixture sit in the garbage can for an hour and then scrub clean. If possible, leave outside to dry in the direct sunlight.
  2. Wash and disinfect toilet brush holders. Also, take these outside and wash thoroughly. To disinfect, use 1 part bleach to 6 parts water. Let sit in the solution for a couple of hours, rinse and let dry.
  3. Turn over furniture and vacuum the bottoms. Bottoms of furniture can collect “dust bunnies.”
  4. Clean the tops of doors, trim, artwork, and all horizontal surfaces. Dirt can go unnoticed.
  5. Winterize your entry. Invest in a tough coir outdoor mat, and a boot scraper to minimize muddy messes.
  6. Clean your windows. Dirty glass windows will cut down daylight, especially when we need it during the winter months to chase away the winter blues.
